This Crispy Orange Tofu is drenched in a sweet & tangy citrus sauce for a cozy meal that’s better than takeout

Serves: 2

Ingredients

  • 400 g block of tofu

  • 1 tbsp sunflower oil

  • 1 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari)

  • 3 tbsp cornstarch

  • =========

  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil

  • 2 cm ginger

  • 3 cloves garlic

  • 1/4 tsp chili flakes (optional)

  • 240 ml orange juice (fresh!)

  • 55 g brown sugar

  • 60 ml soy sauce (or tamari)

  • 3 tbsp vinegar

  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

  • 2 tbsp water

  • =========

  • rice

  • vegetables to stir fry

Directions

  • Pre-heat the oven to 220°C

  • Tear the tofu into chuncks for a more chicken-like texture, or cut into small cubes. Toss the tofu in a bowl with the oil and tamari, then sprinkle the cornstarch on top and toss again. Transfer to a baking sheet and bake on the top rack of the oven for 30 minutes, flipping halfway through.

  • Prepare the rice as instructed on the package.

  • Warm the sesame oil in a medium pan over medium heat. Once warm, add the garlic, ginger, and red chili flakes. Sauté for 60 seconds, then add in the orange juice, brown sugar, soy sauce and vinegar. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook for 3 to 5 minutes. Mix the cornstarch with the water until dissolved, then add the slurry to the sauce and simmer for another 3 to 5 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened and can coat the back of a spoon.

  • Stir fry the vegatables in a separate frying pan.

  • Remove the tofu from the oven and add it to the pan with suauce. Add the rice and vegetables to a plate, cover with the sauce.
